Lawn care can seem so complicated and confusing, but it is not. There are a few steps each year that can be done to save you headache and heartache – but most importantly, money! Lawn services can be expensive and might not be the best option for your lawn. Not every lawn is the same, so it might need a little different care from your neighbors. This is just a starting place to get the basic information. When you come in, we will talk to you specifically about your yard and what you might need.

Step 1 -

Fertilome’s All Season Lawn Food Plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer. This should be applied early spring, around March through mid-April. This application gives your lawn a light feeding combined with the pre-emergent herbicide Prodiamine. Prodiamine is the best pre-emergent available because it gives your lawn up to 8 months of weed seed prevention. If you are or have applied grass seed, wait three weeks after the seed has germinated before putting this step down.

Step 2 -

Fertilome’s Lawn Food with Iron. Apply this step in September – try to think of Labor Day as the time to do this step. This step gives your lawn quick release Nitrogen with Iron to strengthen your lawn and give it that deep green color. This product is great because it has quick release nitrogen. Slow release products are temperature sensitive and will not be available to your grass when the temperature cools down.

Step 3 -

Fertilome’s Lawn Food with Iron. Yes this is the same step as Step 2, but very important to repeat this step. Apply in late fall – try to think of Thanksgiving as the time to do this step. You apply this while the lawn is still green, but not growing anymore. This late fall feeding will be stored in the grass and will help build a stronger root system this winter and provide great green-up next spring.

Bonus Step -

Natural Guard by Fertilome, Top Dressing. This can be applied in the spring or the fall. The main purpose of this product is to reduce watering up to 50% with repeated use. It is an organic compost, light fertilizer, high concentration of humic acid, humates, and microbs to enrich your soil. Humates hold nutrients in a usable form for the growing of grass and plants. It will help compost grass clippings and other organic material, turning them into nutrients. This Top Dressing will break up clay soils for better penetration of water and nutrients, creating natural aeration.

This is the season to start prepping for spring. Tulips, hyacinths, crocus, daffodils, ect. get planted now so that they will come up in the spring. Bulbs are so easy to plant and take such little work, but you get huge impact out of them.

Quality: The bigger the bulb, the bigger the flower it will produce. Healthy bulbs are firm and fresh.

Planting: Loosen the soil before planting the bulbs. Press the bulbs carefully into the soil with the pointed side up. Cover the bulbs with the removed soil and gently press down.

Fertilizing: Fertilize with Bulb Tone in the spring as bulbs are emerging and again in the fall to help them over the winter.

Deer Resistant: Daffodils and paper whites are reliably deer resistant. Other bulbs should be sprayed with Liquid Fence at the first sight of emerging bulbs.

Designing Your Bulb Garden or Container: Three key factors to keep in mind when planning a bulb garden – flowering period, height, and color.

Plan your bulbs to have constant flowering for as long as possible. Crocus and Daffodils will bloom later in the spring. Grape hyacinth is a great gap filler between the two so that you always have color.

Keep in mind of flower height. You do not want to plant daffodils in front because it would block your view of the hyacinths.

Another tip is to plant large clumps of one color bulb. This will give you a greater impact than if you plant a few spaced apart.

Summer’s heat can take a toll on your container gardens. Just because it is fall doesn’t mean you have to do traditional yellows and oranges. Mix up your containers with lime greens, rich purples and fuschia. Touches of burnt orange will give it an autumn look. Mums are not the only fall flowers available. Flowering kale and pansies love the cooler temperatures and can handle frost. You can keep the same soil that is in the pot, just mix it to break apart any old roots. The lime green pot is apart a new line we just got in. They are environmentally friendly and have the look of ceramic, but light weight like fiber pots.

This pot is also from our new line of foam pots and features the more traditional reds, yellows and oranges. Adding faux leaves gives an extra brightness to the pot and brings out the color.

These are my favorite. I like the rustic ceramic pots with grapevine looped around the top. It adds texture and the rustic look is so popular right now.

September is almost here and it is a welcome change. The cooler air has made this last week very enjoyable. I have never been a huge fall decorator, but ever since the more natural tones and textures have made such a big debut, I can’t wait to decorate my new house. For this setup, we borrowed a co-workers front door step We used charcoal urns as the main focal point. This color is great for all the seasons and matches her trim. The urns are filled with sedum and faux wheat to add height, while the cream pumpkins rest on birch wreaths. The ribbon is a natural burlap type fabric in a golden yellow. The jute totes are a new addition. Our artist Becky, customized these to say Welcome Fall, but she can write whatever you desire! They would make an awesome gift bag.

Don’t worry – for the bright fall displays, we have that too! We replaced the urns with natural twig plant stands. These are an awesome accent to your fall decor, but can be used in the winter too (add Christmas lights & live greens) Set a pumpkin or mum into the stand with leaves and ribbon. Or hang indian corn from the front. We added scarecrows and gourds to make it a little more festive. Incorporate pots that you already have from the summer – unless the flowers are looking a little shabby – then you can just add a mum (only $5.99!!!!) We have way more ideas in the store so stop in!
