Get creative this year your containers. Stop doing the same old plants and colors and jazz them up. Pick a theme and dive head first into the wonderful world of color. Go monochromatic or a bright painters pallet, but just remember to follow the rules of planting.

Sun requirements – obviously you can’t mix sun and shade plants together in the same container. But sometimes when you start shopping for plants, you can easily forget and start grabbing anything. So start with a plan of how many pots and keep in mind sun or shade.

Start with the soil first. You want to use excellent soilless potting mix. The better the mix, the better your flowers will grow. We recommend Fafard Potting Mix. It is great for containers and lets the roots grow easily. Using top soil and cheap potting soil will clump and make it hard for the roots to grow resulting in a poor plant.

When picking out your flowers, the sure fire method to create a stunning container is to use a thriller, filler, and spiller. The thriller is the tall plant that can be planted in the center – ie purple fountain grass, coffee cups, canas, salvia. The fillers are moundy plants that will fill up space in your container – ie vinca periwinkle, dianthus, diacia. The spillers are the trailing flowers that will cascade down the sides of your pots – ie sweet potato vine, petunias, verbena.

Grouping containers together can give a visually stunning look. Think outside the box – or in this case the container and try new combinations of annuals and perennials to create containers that will “wow” your visitors!

Terrariums have made a wonderful comeback due to new stylish containers and due to the movement of anything vintage is cool again. They are now part of home decor and no green thumb is needed. Terrariums are miniature gardens under glass. You can be as creative or simple with your terrarium and decorate it to your personal liking.

Open & Closed Terrariums – Open terrariums are not the same as a dish garden / planter. They are stillin a glass container, just no lid. The sides are high around the plants and the container only has a small opening. Closed terrariums require less water because none is evaporated. The water used by the plants is released into the atmosphere, condensed on the top and sides of the terrarium and falls back to the plant – creating its own ecosystem. Very cool and very easy.

Create your own Terrarium

Glass container – needs to be cleaned and dried completely before use. You can get creative with you containers – mason jars, miniature greenhouses, vases, apothecary jars, wine bottles. Pretty much anything glass with a lid or small opening.

Pebbles – Add small stones, decorative rock, or pebbles to the bottom of your container. You can also mix in some colored glass to add some interest. The neat part of terrariums is that you see everything. You’ll see each layer that you put down. So make it interesting with the choice of rocks you use. It depends on the size of your container, but usually put down a 1/2″ to 1″ of pebbles. This ensures proper circulation of water and drainage.

Activated Charcoal – Lightly cover the pebbles with charcoal. This is only necessary in a closed environment. The charcoal will filter the air and keep it fresh from oder.

Sphagnum or Sheet Moss – This layer will prevent soil from mixing into your pebbles and charcoal. It acts more like a filter – lets excess water

through, but not the soil. Keeps a visually pleasing terrarium.

Potting Mix – This step sounds easy enough, but you do want to make sure you are using good potting mix – not dirt! You don’t need special potting mix designed for terrariums. We recommend Fafard Professional Potting Mix (it’s a loose blend of peat moss, perlite, and organic matter.) Cheap potting mix usually drains poorly holding too much moisture. Estimate that 1/3 of your terrarium should be devoted to soil. Put half on top of the moss and put the other half down once you have your plants situated. Mist your soil first to make it slightly damp, but not wet.

Plants – This is where you can get creative. If you have a bigger terrarium, then planning your design is more critical than if you have a small terrarium. Choose plants that are slow growers. We have Itty Bitty plants that are tiny for little terrariums and 2″ – 4″ plants for larger terrariums.

Plants that work well in terrariums:
Ferns – Bird’s Nest, Maiden Hair, Button, ect…
Palms
Hypostes – Pink, White, Red Splash
Herbs
Crotons
Baby Tears
Duckfoot Coleus
….and much more

Choose plants with different textures, heights, and colors to make your terrarium visually interesting. Place your plants in you terrariums before planting them so that you can play with the design. Start with the bigger plants and fill in with the smaller plants. After you have figured out your design, you can add the rest of the potting soil.

Moss- Living moss can add visual interest and can be placed on top of the soil and around the plants. We carry dried haircap, rock cap and cushion moss. It has to be soaked for 30 seconds to bring the life back into it. You are able to break the moss into pieces to fit nicely in your terrarium. Moss does not work well in open terrariums because it needs the moist, humid environment to survive. Digging moss outside can pose problems if you do not take a few extra steps. You need to rinse it thoroughly to rid it of any debris or unwanted pests. It must be quarantined in a terrarium environment for a week or two first before putting it in your finished terrarium. This will let you know if there is a mold infestation or if it is implanted with weed seed.

Accessorize your terrarium- Make it personal. Add rocks to make a path. Add a fairy to transform it into a fairy garden with furniture and arbors. Make it a mini garden with little gnome and mushroom figurines. You can decorate it however to fit your personal taste.

Caring For Your Terrarium

Watering – After your terrarium is completed, mist the plants and moss. Hopefully you have already dampened the soil. Keep an eye on the soil so that it doesn’t dry out. Add water gradually – you can add more, but can’t subtract! Too much moisture can cause a lot of condensation and mold may start to form. If too much water gets in, remove the ld so that some of the water can evaporate.

Lighting – Display the terrarium in bright, indirect light. Rotate the container, if necessary, so all sides get light. Avoid direct rays, or plants might cook.

You are all set – grab your supplies and get creative with your own terrarium!

Lawn care can seem so complicated and confusing, but it is not. There are a few steps each year that can be done to save you headache and heartache – but most importantly, money! Lawn services can be expensive and might not be the best option for your lawn. Not every lawn is the same, so it might need a little different care from your neighbors. This is just a starting place to get the basic information. When you come in, we will talk to you specifically about your yard and what you might need.

Step 1 -

Fertilome’s All Season Lawn Food Plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer. This should be applied early spring, around March through mid-April. This application gives your lawn a light feeding combined with the pre-emergent herbicide Prodiamine. Prodiamine is the best pre-emergent available because it gives your lawn up to 8 months of weed seed prevention. If you are or have applied grass seed, wait three weeks after the seed has germinated before putting this step down.

Step 2 -

Fertilome’s Lawn Food with Iron. Apply this step in September – try to think of Labor Day as the time to do this step. This step gives your lawn quick release Nitrogen with Iron to strengthen your lawn and give it that deep green color. This product is great because it has quick release nitrogen. Slow release products are temperature sensitive and will not be available to your grass when the temperature cools down.

Step 3 -

Fertilome’s Lawn Food with Iron. Yes this is the same step as Step 2, but very important to repeat this step. Apply in late fall – try to think of Thanksgiving as the time to do this step. You apply this while the lawn is still green, but not growing anymore. This late fall feeding will be stored in the grass and will help build a stronger root system this winter and provide great green-up next spring.

Bonus Step -

Natural Guard by Fertilome, Top Dressing. This can be applied in the spring or the fall. The main purpose of this product is to reduce watering up to 50% with repeated use. It is an organic compost, light fertilizer, high concentration of humic acid, humates, and microbs to enrich your soil. Humates hold nutrients in a usable form for the growing of grass and plants. It will help compost grass clippings and other organic material, turning them into nutrients. This Top Dressing will break up clay soils for better penetration of water and nutrients, creating natural aeration.

This is the season to start prepping for spring. Tulips, hyacinths, crocus, daffodils, ect. get planted now so that they will come up in the spring. Bulbs are so easy to plant and take such little work, but you get huge impact out of them.

Quality: The bigger the bulb, the bigger the flower it will produce. Healthy bulbs are firm and fresh.

Planting: Loosen the soil before planting the bulbs. Press the bulbs carefully into the soil with the pointed side up. Cover the bulbs with the removed soil and gently press down.

Fertilizing: Fertilize with Bulb Tone in the spring as bulbs are emerging and again in the fall to help them over the winter.

Deer Resistant: Daffodils and paper whites are reliably deer resistant. Other bulbs should be sprayed with Liquid Fence at the first sight of emerging bulbs.

Designing Your Bulb Garden or Container: Three key factors to keep in mind when planning a bulb garden – flowering period, height, and color.

Plan your bulbs to have constant flowering for as long as possible. Crocus and Daffodils will bloom later in the spring. Grape hyacinth is a great gap filler between the two so that you always have color.

Keep in mind of flower height. You do not want to plant daffodils in front because it would block your view of the hyacinths.

Another tip is to plant large clumps of one color bulb. This will give you a greater impact than if you plant a few spaced apart.
